Rare Photos of Partition of India – 1947

partition-of-india-1947-rare-photos (51)Educated Indians are aware of the ghastly 2-century imposition of British colonialism on India. However, because history is generally written by non-scientists, most Indians are utterly unaware of the horrendous human cost (1.8 billion violent and non-violent avoidable deaths in the period 1757-1947).

  1. After reading most of the comments I feel really sorry that hate still persists, it is so sad. Even one death is hard for any family to bear of any religion, and here we are bickering whose bodies lie there in dirty waters, shame shame shame. Lets try to live in Peace with each other and to respect each other and let it begin with me!

    • Shahid, appreciable words, but could you take a morcha condemning Taliban, Al-Qaeda, SIMI, IM, LeT etc? How about launching a Facebook campaign for a start? Preaching to a willing, obedient and servile choir that doesn’t know even a tenth of its History is not only easy, but clever Taqya. I was chased out of my home and none of my neighbors, so called secular leaning Muslim neighbors came to our help. Ours was one of the only two Hindu families living in that street. This did not happen in Pakistan or Kashmir, but happened in the heart of Bangalore. My dad, the secular and fearless fauji that he is, went and spoke to people at the mosque barely 80 metres away from our home, the Maulana assured him he would look into the matter but the stones continued to rain and one fine day, we decided enough was enough and left the neighborhood, for good. Our neighbors were sympathetic but not one word beyond sympathy was expressed. The other Hindu family who have been living in the neighborhood for a long long time said this was how Hindus from the street were evicted. This happened in BTM Layout, Bangalore. Such despicable behavior is understandable during a riot when people are blinded by rage, but this was no riot, but systematic cleansing. Not even an argument or fight happened, no saffron flags flew over our very liberal Hindu household. The Muslim neighbors would fearlessly send their children to collect Tulsi leaves or flowers that grew in abundance.. but when it came to supporting a Kafir, none of them could go against the community diktat. We were told that a certain Corporator belonging to the Congress party had an eye on the property and wanted it, at any cost. Some locals urged us to meet the BJP candidate, also a Muslim, but we didn’t want to get sandwiched between two political heavyweights and antagonize anyone. The decision was made and we moved out within a fortnight.
I know a Muslim living in a Hindu majority neighborhood may suffer in silence like we did. I feared for the lives of my old parents.. didn’t know when a large rock would come hurtling through the door or window. The upstairs windows were smashed once too. Honestly though, I would completely avoid living in a Muslim majority neighborhood after the experience. The hostility gets a bit too obvious after a while. Its fine as a bachelor, but not fine when you have a family. Maybe I chose the wrong neighborhood. The sermons are full of hate, the NDF campaigns during elections are full of hate and such malicious lies, they make VHP(scum I loathe) look good. The Utopia I longingly wish for is still light years away. I know I can face the same in any other locality too, but the fact that we were singled out for being Hindus has really made me sit up and give serious thought to my religious identity, which was non existent. No, I haven’t become a radical nor have I joined RSS or VHP, nor do I bait Muslims, but I’ve become conscious enough that I may be killed for my faith tomorrow. I’ve lived through a riot or two but I’d taken it for granted back then that mob fury is blind, but what I experienced here was pure hatred and hostility and it saddened me a lot and has certainly scarred me.

      • Ranjit; appreciable words, but could you take a morcha condemning RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena, Hindu Ekta etc? How about launching a Facebook campaign for a start? Preaching to a willing, obedient and servile choir that doesn’t know even a tenth of its History is not only easy, but clever Taqya.
I am really puzzled Ranjit a man of your intellect fails to find the difference between cleansing and a case of vested interests.
Consider this example A liberal house hold irrespective of the religion. Girl studies, does graduation, post Grad and mean while falls in Love with a Guy from Other religion or other community/caste. Now the whole system(including family members, community elders and lot others) would be activated. A newly found synergy would be exhibited across the ages and she would be pressurized to opt for the choice of Family/community/religion. During this process all the near ones and dear ones including immediate family members out of choice/compulsion would adhere to the unspoken agenda of saving the family dignity.
Does this mean they are Enemies, death mongers and whatever you call ?
Now that you have understood the agony, fear and harassment being in minority; what or how do you connect with the Muslims of India who have been slaughtered more and more in riots by other communities and the state machinery as well.

      • Ranjit, I am very sorry for what you had to go through, I condemn it!
Someone, and I am saying anyone, should have helped you in the name of humanity. It is really unfortunate and should not happen in a civilized society for any reason, may it be religious hatred or monetary, and again I say it’s shameful!

  2. The Ideological propaganda used by the foreign colonialists and still the same but are now being used by the present political entities. They ensure that once class will be dominant over the other. Such is the human nature. It is all about greed….and Human greed is never satisfied. Doesn’t matter where or which country….it is always the same.

Your argument of community marriage is terribly weak. You cannot take one case to highlight your point. The opposition to girls marrying outside their religion/caste is common across India and is not confined to one homogenous group. Please stop making fictitious claims. Post independence History is replete with enough incidents to prove the point that Muslims in independent India have indulged in initiating riots, desecration of temples and provoke Hindus enough to warrant a violent retaliation. There is only one incident I can recollect when Hindu fanatics made the first move by demolishing the Babri Masjid. People talk about the Nellie massacre but nobody talks about the AASU/Indigenous Assamese killed by the Bangladeshi’s in the run up to the elections. More than 800 AASU volunteers were killed by Bangladeshi settlers in systematic hit jobs. The retaliation was obviously brutal when Congress won with illegal votes cast by Bangladeshi settlers who weren’t supposed to vote.
I haven’t turned bitter but I’ve suddenly developed a keen interest in the Muslim psyche. What makes them develop this siege mentality that they become willing accomplices to heinous crime. Believe me, this isn’t a Hindu vs Muslim issue. It is a Muslim vs Non-Muslim issue. The recent riots in Mumbai, the molesting of female cops during the same incident blows the strawman you raised of Muslims being the lone victims. Hey, I haven’t even mentioned the plight of Kashmiri Pandits who continue to live in relief camps.

FYI, my cousin sister is married to a Muslim and nobody opposed the marriage after our concerns were addressed that the groom to be is suitable enough to take care of the girl. No blood was shed.. no expletives exchanged, no case filed. You won’t find too many stories with a happy ending when the girl is Muslim and the guy is non-muslim. So many murders of non-muslim boys have taken place for having affairs or wanting to marry a Muslim girl. Here, watch this video and have fun.

  4. “No”, the oppression of minorities in Pakistan and Bangladesh is well documented. Can you come up with actual figures, not statistics in terms of percentages, of Muslim girls forcibly married, raped, abducted by Hindu men? I mean, FORCIBLY. Please leave riots out of your calculation. I have already said and will say it again, riots turn men into beasts. I have witnessed it and barely managed to escape with my life and I don’t want to witness another one. I know the madness that happens during a riot. The Christians and Hindus are repeatedly targeted in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Their daughters are forcibly abducted, converted and have no choice but to accept the man as his husband or Hindus who are arriving in India from Pakistan wouldn’t want to stay here permanently. They truly fear for their lives and their women. The case of Christians is equally pitiable. The blasphemy law has been used against them time and again.
Is the same happening to Muslims in India? Are they being oppressed like the minorities in Pakistan? Drive around any neighborhood in Bangalore and you can see Muslims who are prosperous living a life of luxury. Some of the biggest names in real estate, hotel, catering is owned by Muslims. If India was indeed such an awful place for Muslims as you project, then you wouldn’t have Rohingya Muslims settling by the droves in India. Hindu/Muslim amity is a complex issue and both communities have to work together for a harmonious future by eliminating the middlemen involved.

    • Hallo Ranjit ! the judcious and point to point arguments U advanced has sewn the voice of NO … bcz itz a well documented fact that usually the Muslim ppl are the real riot mongers and trouble fabricators….if they settle in large number at any patch in India they must create trouble of some kind or other….and their miscreance is more communal and less national….bcz they have no national feeling at all….what they want is that their supremacy to prevail everywhere…. in terms of the dictations from their clergy men…and they are never to obey the law of land ….rather they can turn and twist it as per the convenience of their SHARIAT Law….and in order to uphold such fanaticism they can go to any limit beyond humanity….HINDUs are just a species like goats and sheep for them whom they prefer to slay like the real Goat & Sheep…..bcz they are no humans…they are barbarians…..hence no conscience is expected off them….thatz the fact…..

  6. Its really touching to see these photos , People went through these for no reason, they were killed for not commiting any crime , my head just spining after seeing these.
Is this what the world gave to us after looting everything from us. Really Shame on us.Pity mother India.

  7. It was so unfortunate that millions of innocent people got killed in the process and that was because the British government wanted things to go that way in order to create hatred amongst the new states. They could conquer and rule India for so long, they could certainly have this bloodshed avoided.
